City Planter

This piece grew (pun intended) out of an experience of painting in the rain. (See the painting titled Cooper Square in the Rain.) In the mist, the shapes of the buildings against the sky flattened to make the jagged “V” shape that shows up on both the painting and on the planter. If you look at the planter, you can see other motifs that appear in the paintings. This was one of the earlier sculptures made for this project and represents my first reflection on the juxtaposition of smooth, geometric shapes and irregular, organic shapes – a visual phenomenon that appears wherever there are buildings and growing things together.
